So I’m Looking For a Job – Part Last

When I left you last time, I was in the midst of the interview process. After following my own advice, I received two job offers within six weeks of sending my first resume. The problem was deciding which one to take.

What is important? Your sense of a rewarding job may be different than mine, but should probably include more than the salary offer.

  • Job Expectations. If getting coffee for the staff, or cleaning up after the CEO’s new puppy, isn’t your thing – this may not be the job for you. Ask for details if the job description includes “ad-hoc work/special projects” and see how they feel about initiative or mentoring.
  • Benefits. Affordable company health insurance is a must-have, unless you qualify for subsidized Obamacare. Secondarily, even small companies can participate in pre-tax Commuter, Vision, Dental, or Prescription Drug savings plans. Lastly, is there a retirement plan – whether a larger 401K plan, or a Simple IRA – and a plus if there is any company match.
  • Work Schedule. The hours should match both your lifestyle, and your obligations to family. Consider your work/life balance, and make sure the hours meet your needs.
  • Commute. Personally, I want my commute to be simple, and relatively inexpensive. In NYC, it is no fun walking in the rain!
  • Environment. What kind of building, where will you be sitting, how do co-workers and ex-employees view their job, and how does the company contribute towards career/personal growth. Do an internet search and see what others have said.
  • Financial comfort. Your new salary should be consistent with your previous position because it’s no fun to decide what you have to eliminate from your budget.

You may have noticed I listed salary last. In your upwardly mobile world, it may hold a different position.

And by the way – I got the job I really liked, with a company providing not just the above, but one who is dedicated to employee growth and satisfaction. A win-win as far as I’m concerned.
