Books, Books, and More Books

Years ago, when I was working at a job that didn’t keep me busy and allowed me to read at the front desk, I read a book a day because I also had travel time back and forth on the train.

69  Stuart Woods novels (Stone Barrington, Herbie Fisher, Ed Eagle, Teddy Fay, Rick Barron)

7   Lydia Sherrer (Lily Singer)
6   Karina Cooper (The St. Croix Chronicles)
5   Jeffrey Archer (The Clifton Chronicles)

4   Laura Joh Rowland (Victorian Mysteries)

Assorted Poul Anderson, Isaac Asimov, Robert Clarke, Laurel K. Hamilton, Ray Bradbury, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Star Trek, Jasper Fforde, Philipa Gregory, George R. R. Martin, Murray Leinster, Kelly Oliver

Books for 2 Book Clubs (Saving CeeCee Hunnicutt, The Personal Librarian, West with Giraffes, Becoming, Where the Crawdads Sing, Oil and Marble)

Many “Just Because” – Books mostly found in any list of 100 greatest novels because education is always important and I don’t remember reading some of them…..(seeing the movie doesn’t count)… like Oliver Twist, Jane Eyre, Treasure Island, Robinson Crusoe, Old Man and the Sea, Mutiny on the Bounty, Heidi, etc.

Reading is a superb pleasure.  I often keep notes about an amazing sentence or phrase, re-using some of them on occasion.  I loved quoting phrases that hit me hard in my own novel…giving credit where due, or course…because they led to a scene from my own life.

I’d rather lose my hearing than my eyesight, but I’m not naïve enough to assume reading will not someday be difficult, whether from eyesight or memory, and I’m happy that so many improvements are being made in large scale print books and books on tape.  And maybe I’ll find a willing aide to read to me in my dotage, which will allow me to share a favorite book with another person.

Meanwhile, two book clubs have given me a new list of books and authors to explore and it’s been just grand!!
